Only in combination with the Feed Conveyor for automated recording of serial numbers of SSD’s and HDD’s

  • Operator puts 15 HDD´s on the feed conveyor and starts the shredding process
  • Conveyor automatically moves one HDD below the camera / scanner unit
  • Unit takes a photo and saves it into a folder on customer´s laptop computer
  • Scanner simultaneously scans the HDD´s barcodes and saves them in a txt-file on customer´s laptop computer
  • Conveyor then moves the HDD further and finally drops it directly into the shredder
  • After taking the picture and scan of the barcodes and on the way into the shredder there is no access to the HDD possible any more

3.5” HDD on the conveyor. HDD must be put onto the conveyor with the barcode sticker on the upper side. Orientation of the HDD does not matter. Photo of the HDD is saved in a folder of customer´s laptop computer. Thus nonbarcode-based information can be retrieved and saved if necessary. Also, if barcode reading should not work because of damage to the barcode, plain text serial-no. can be read from the photo. Read barcodes are saved in a txt-file on customer´s computer. From there they can be copied and pasted into shredding record documents.

Interchangeable Screens - Adapting to Different Security Requirements

Interchangeable Screens - Adapting to Different Security Requirements

With JBF's interchangeable sizing screens, the final particle size can be adapted quickly to suit different security requirements. Each machine has its own compatible set of screens, which can be swapped within that specific machine. Swap to a finer or coarser screen to match the job, without changing the cutting unit. Smaller screen holes typically deliver higher security output (at reduced throughput), while larger holes increase throughput for less stringent requirements.

The JBF HD 38/50 is designed to destroy nearly all commonly used HDDs. Without a screen it delivers basic industrial destruction, then screens can reduce output to as low as 3mm for paramount security requirements.

The sizing screen defines the maximum particle size leaving the disintegrator: material is cut repeatedly until it can pass through the screen holes. This gives you a practical way to match output to different standards and security targets without changing machines. Because shred shape varies, hole diameter is a practical guide rather than an exact guarantee of final chip dimensions.

For high-security applications, the 3 mm screen produces particles aligned with DIN 66399 levels O5, T6, H6, and E5. To help reduce wear in demanding use, the screens are made from wear-resistant HARDOX material.

Simple Operation with Built-In Safety

Simple Operation with Built-In Safety

Operation is straightforward, with all push buttons, indicator lights, the emergency stop and the main on/off switch grouped in one central console.  Electrical components such as contactors, overload protection switches, the emergency-stop relay, main switch, transformers and terminals are arranged within the central control cabinet.  Machine functions are controlled automatically by a specially programmed Eaton easy PLC controller.

Designed with safety in mind, the cutter unit uses a feed lever to keep operation tidy and controlled.  To process larger media, or multiple HDDs in parallel where appropriate, the hopper top cover can be lifted.  For safety, a limit switch stops the shredder while the top cover is open, and also while the control cabinet door is open.  The result is a high-capability destruction system with an operator-friendly workflow.

Optional Extras and Workflow Upgrades
These models can be specified with a range of optional extras to improve automation, operator convenience, dust control and auditability.

Automated feed conveyor and proof-of-destruction workflow
For higher-volume HDD destruction, an optional mobile feed conveyor can be fitted to automate feeding up to 15 x 3.5" hard drives or 30 x 2.5" hard drives into the main cutting unit. The conveyor feed interval can be adjusted to suit the media type and screen fitted, helping reduce the risk of overfeeding or jamming.

Photo & barcode logging
An optional camera and scanner arrangement can support an auditable destruction process by photographing each drive and recording barcode data before destruction. Details can be captured directly to a connected laptop folder while also saving the barcode into a text file for later use in destruction records.

Additional Extras Include

  • Collection bins or boxes for convenient handling of shredded particles
  • Assembly aid for screens to simplify screen changeover
  • Vacuuming hopper with 40 mm port to connect a suitable vacuum cleaner (can be bolted into flash screens)

Understanding Security Levels (DIN 66399 ISO/IEC 21964) and Compliance

Security standards and compliance (DIN 66399)

The JBF 38-50HD-6 contains a single cutting unit evaluated by CPNI / NPSA. The 35-50HD FLASH model uses the same machine format and main cutting system as the 38-50HD-6 model and has an added  separate FLASH cutting unit for SSDs, USB sticks, SD cards and similar smaller media.

Security levels depend on the media category and the screen fitted.

Main cutting unit (HDDs and larger media) - Without screen: DIN 66399 T1 / H4 / E2, and with screen: depending on screen size and media type, these models can achieve up to O5 / T6 / H7 / E5

For the 6mm HDD configuration shown above, the main cutting unit is aligned with DIN 66399 H-5, meeting NPSA government guidelines

Auxiliary cutting unit for Flash media (35/50 Flash only) - Without screen: DIN 66399 F1 / O3 / T4 / E3, and with screen: up to F4 / O6 / T7 / E5, depending on screen fitted and media processed

It is important to note that if your application requires evidence of specific security standards, you should request the relevant detail and supporting documentation from your chosen security advisors as part of your evaluation and purchase process.

JBF HD 38/50 Mobile Hard Drive Shredder

Just as confidential paper records must be destroyed properly once they are no longer needed, digital storage media must also be destroyed correctly at end of life.  Hard drives can retain highly sensitive business, central and local government and military information long after they have been removed from service.  In commercial, government and defence environments, improper disposal creates an avoidable security, compliance and reputational risk.

The JBF HD 38/50 is a specialist hard drive shredder built for secure, on-site destruction of hard drives and other magnetic or electronic media. It is well suited to Defence, Police, secure ITAD and other high-security environments where chain of custody, compliance and on-site destruction matter. Optional security screens allowing the output size to be matched to the required level of destruction.

Key reasons buyers choose it

  • Purpose-built for destruction of commonly used hard disk drives
  • Optional exchangeable security screens to increase destruction level
  • Suitable for static installations or mobile deployment
  • Compact footprint, requiring only around 1.7 sqm of floor space
  • Can be moved with one or two hand pallet trucks for flexible siting
  • Simple, automated PLC-controlled operation to reduce operator input
  • Listed by NPSA in its Catalogue of Security Equipment, and this shredder has been NPSA (formerly known as CPNI) evaluated to shred hard drives

Security standards and compliance (DIN 66399)

Security levels depend on the screen fitted and the media being destroyed. Without a screen, the machine shreds hard drives into strip-cut pieces for basic industrial destruction. Adding a security screen reduces the final particle size and increases the destruction level. The optional screen range includes 14 mm, 12 mm, 10 mm, 8 mm, 6 mm and, for certain higher-security applications, 3 mm.

Typical DIN 66399 outputs by screen size are:

  • 14mm screen: O3 / T3 / H5 / E2
  • 12mm screen: O4 / T4 / H5 / E3
  • 10mm screen: O4 / T4 / H5 / E3
  • 8mm screen: O4 / T4 / H5 / E3
  • 6mm screen: O4 / T5 / H6 / E4
  • 3mm screen: O5 / T6 / H7 / E5

If you need to evidence a particular output size or security level for your application, we can advise on the most suitable screen configuration.

Please note that the smaller the screen size the longer it takes to shred each item. The feed rate will also need to be reduced to avoid over heating the machine. Please contact us for more information with your specific requirements.

Heavy-duty cutting unit for hard drives and mixed media

The HD 38/50 uses a solid industrial cutting unit with 30 mm cutters and a powerful geared motor, developed specifically for hard drive destruction. The cutting geometry is designed to grip and process HDDs effectively, while the machine can also handle CDs, DVDs, video cassettes, DLT tapes, magnetic tapes, electronic circuit boards and similar media.

Media is fed continuously through the hopper slot, while the foldable hopper cover allows larger media or multiple hard drives to be loaded when required. A safety interlock stops the machine if the hopper cover is opened during operation.

Screen options and particle size control

The screen system allows the machine to be adapted to different operational and security requirements. Once fitted beneath the cutting shafts, the screen retains the shredded material until it has been cut down small enough to pass through the selected mesh size. This gives buyers flexibility to balance throughput against output size and security requirement.

As a guide, throughput varies by screen size. Manufacturer literature gives practical examples of approximately:

  • 80 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with a 14 mm screen
  • 50 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with a 12 mm screen
  • 30 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with a 10 mm screen
  • 22 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with an 8 mm screen
  • 20 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with a 6 mm screen
  • 3 x 3.5" HDDs per hour with a 3 mm screen

Deployment options - static or mobile

The JBF 38-50 offers exceptional deployment flexibility and can be supplied either as a permanent fixed installation or as a fully mobile solution. Mobile configurations can be built for truck or van mounting, with a hydraulic main drive option available for PTO operation where required, making the system ideal for on-site destruction and rapid response applications.

For more demanding or specialist requirements, bespoke solutions can also be developed, including containerised systems for operation in remote or hostile environments, and high-security installations for embassies, government premises and other sensitive locations.

This flexibility allows the JBF 38-50 to be tailored to operational, security and logistical requirements where resilience, mobility and business continuity are critical.

Important operating notes

Please always refer to the Operating Instructions supplied with the machine. The operating manual should be kept readily available at the machine at all times, and all staff should be trained and instructed before operating, cleaning or maintaining the unit. The manual also requires the operator to use the machine in full compliance with the operating instructions and to maintain it correctly.

This machine is not intended for SSDs and other FLASH media - please use the 35-50 Flash for with an auxiliary cutting unit for these types of media.

Correct routine maintenance by the operator is vital for safe operation, reliable throughput and protection of the machine, with screen cleaning being particularly important. The operating manual states that the shredding unit must be cleaned at least once a week and that magnetic parts must be removed manually from the machine and screens weekly, or earlier if throughput capacity drops, as these parts can block the screen and may cause serious damage if not removed on a regular basis. Before cleaning, the main switch must be turned off and secured so the machine cannot be switched back on. When cleaning screens, magnetic build-up should be removed carefully with suitable tools and screen holes unblocked without damaging the screen.

Batteries must be removed from devices before shredding, especially lithium-ion batteries, to reduce fire risk.

Hardened metal objects must never be fed into the machine, as this can permanently damage the cutting knives and associated parts. The cutting system is manufactured from specialist hardened steel components and, in certain circumstances, cutters or knife shafts may be individually changed and re-sharpened. In some cases, as specialist workshop equipment may be required and the cutting assembly, or in some cases the machine itself, may need to be removed from site for repair at the JBF facility at the customers expense.

A suitable annual preventative maintenance contract from installation by a trained engineer is strongly recommended. The operating manual states that the unit should be placed under a suitable annual preventative maintenance contract from new or the warranty may be void and also recommends at least bi-annual service check by a trained person.
